The Honors College is offering a new scholarship this semester named after former Dean Dr. Karl Petruso.
The Karl M. Petruso Scholarship for Fieldwork in the Liberal Arts was created in an effort to attract more liberal arts students to the Honors College. All liberal arts students enrolled in the Honors College are eligible to apply.
“I thought this might be an opportunity to raise the visibility of the honors college among liberal arts students in all disciplines,” said Dr. Petruso. “The more we talked about it, the more we decided that it might be appropriate to target it to students who wanted to do field research toward their Honors Senior project.”
He said this is a particularly good way to pay for study abroad programs, although, he expects to see creativity from students.
“I like to see imaginative projects. Unusual projects,” he said. “As long as they are of high caliber and can contribute to the intellectual, professional, and personal interests of the students who apply for it.”
Dr. Petruso was the Honors College Dean from 2008 to 2016. As a classical archaeologist, he specializes in the Mediterranean region focusing on Greece from prehistoric up until the Roman period. He also teaches and has excavated in a number of different places — Portugal, Egypt, and has done research in Cyprus and Syria.
