Vulcanian Explosion

This photo sequence was taken October 6, 1997 from the small island of Redonda, located ~35 km northwest of Montserrat. Note that the elevation of the central part of Montserrat, clearly visible in the photo’s foreground is ~700 m AMSL. The eruption is from the Soufriere Hills volcano farther to the south. The images are about 2 seconds apart and the final height of the eruption column is ~13.5 km. Note that there is a scale change in the 3rd and final image in the sequence.
