Each GK-12 Graduate Fellow is paired with a Mentor Teacher from either Sam Houston High School (grades 9-12) or its feeder schools – Carter Junior High, Hutcheson Junior High and Workman Junior High (grades 7-8) Anderson Elementary, Rankin Elementary or Remynse Elementary Schools (grade 6). Within small group aspects of the project, vertical teaming is applied.
MAVS Fellows spend 10 hours in their assigned partner school classroom working with their mentor teacher and students. MAVS fellows who participate in the project for two years will automatically alternate from being assigned a junior high school chief mentor teacher one year to a high school chief mentor teacher the following year or vice versa. In this manner both the Mentor Teacher and the Fellow are challenged to strengthen their communication skills and broaden their focus within the program.
