A research is underway in the University of Texas at Arlington to repair bent caps of an in-service bridges. This research aims to develop strategies to be followed to repair bent caps of bridges at service load conditions. The proposed concept consists of using the fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) to increase the strength and corrosion resistance of existing bent caps located on US 80 over Elm Fork Trinity river bridge. The plan for this research is to compare the performance of a representative bent cap repaired with FRP to the one that is not repaired with FRP and to see the effectiveness of the FRP strengthening technique.

The research will consist of three phases. The first phase is the load testing of a selected bridge. This test will involve placing pre-weighed trucks of specific load at various positions on the bridge. The data from this testing will be collected for the analysis of the bridge performance. The second phase involves repairing the bent caps of the selected bridges using (FRP). The third phase is the load testing to evaluate the performance of the bridge after repairing it by installing FRP.
