Often college students are encouraged to think big for their academic projects, but students in the College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs have been told to think small for their senior design projects — tiny actually.
The students are building tiny houses between Greek Row Boulevard and UTA Boulevard.
The college’s design program is called Parallel Construction and it is in its fourth semester, UTA said. The program provides students the opportunity to get hands-on building experience as they design and build their projects.
“I’ve always wanted to do this kind of project with the students,” Brad McCorkle, a UTA architecture lecturer for the last two years and an alumnus, said in a release. “It’s the first time UTA has done something like this. We hope to sell these two units once they’re completed and fund future projects for Parallel Construction.”
Students and faculty are calling the structures micro houses in their course work. One house is 360 square feet, and another is a whopping 390 square feet.
Architecture students have several options for their senior year — a traditional design studio, a research studio, or the design/build studio, UTA said in the release.
“We have to take this project and have a design, construction documents, a budget, and then build it,” Omar Soto, a project manager for one of the houses said in the release.
