Microsoft Teams will add a new feature to Breakout Rooms: the ability for organizers to extend management roles to presenters. This feature will be added to the desktop app only.

Currently scheduled for a September 2021 release, presenters appointed as Breakout Room managers can perform the following operations:

  • Assign and reassign users to rooms
  • Add and delete rooms
  • Open, close, and recreate rooms
  • Adjust other Breakout Room settings
  • Send announcements
  • Set timer

When Breakout Room managers join the meeting, a Breakout Rooms icon will appear in the toolbar. The option to “Assign presenters to manage rooms” will appear under Settings, as seen in the following example:

Once appointed, all managers and Breakout Rooms will be listed, as seen in the following example:

Please note that there can only be one room manager at a time.

To stay up-to-date with the rollout of the new feature, you can follow the launch status at the Microsoft 365 roadmap. For more information about Breakout Rooms, visit the Microsoft Teams support page.
