Updates are coming to Teams to better manage users’ access to the meeting Chat.  Access to Chat is determined by the type of meeting and how users were invited to the meeting. 

These changes will apply to new meetings and will not affect previously scheduled meetings.

Single Meetings

  • Original Invitees
    • Participants directly invited to a single meeting via Teams or Outlook
    • Will be able to enter messages in the Chat during the meeting and after it concludes
  • Forwarded Invitees
    • Participants invited to a single meeting with a forwarded invitation from Outlook
    • Will be able to enter messages in the Chat during the meeting and after it concludes
  • Directly Added Participants
    • Participants added to the meeting via “Add Participant” in Teams
    • Will have access to the meeting Chat only for the duration of the meeting
    • Will be able to see anything that was posted in the Chat during the meeting
    • Will not be able to enter new messages in the Chat when the meeting ends

Recurring Meetings

  • Original Invitees
    • Participants directly invited to a single instance of a recurring meeting series via Teams or Outlook
    • Will be able to enter messages in the Chat during the meeting and after it concludes
  • Forwarded Invitees
    • Participants invited to a single instance of a recurring meeting series with a forwarded invitation from Outlook
    • Will have access to the meeting Chat only for the duration of the meeting
    • Will be able to see anything that was posted in the Chat during the meeting
    • Will not be able to enter new messages in the Chat when the meeting ends
  • Directly Added Participants
    • Participants added to a single instance of a recurring meeting series via “Add Participant” in Teams
    • Will have access to the meeting Chat only for the duration of the meeting
    • Will be able to see anything that was posted in the Chat during the meeting
    • Will not be able to enter new messages in the Chat when the meeting ends
