These are the minimum qualifications required to be considered for the position:

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree or Post Graduate degree at an accredited 4 year College or University

Southwest Airlines’ Revenue Management department has posted its Spring 2017 Intern positions (approximately 5 positions).

These postings are now available for those who are interested in applying for either a(Revenue Management – Market Strategy Analyst Internship) or (Revenue Management – Pricing Analyst Internship).  These exciting Internships will consist of training at Southwest Airlines in the Revenue Management department (Dallas, TX only).  This internship is an opportunity to conduct market research and analysis, as well as make presentations on the airline’s competitive position and market performance.  This internship will also engage Interns in market management strategies and tactics of actual Southwest Airlines competitive markets.  The Revenue Management department is looking for individuals who are motivated and passionate about airline commercial business, revenue management, pricing, and analytics.  Students are welcome to email a copy of their resume, along with which Internship position they would like to express their interest.  In addition, candidates will need to apply on southwest.com to be considered.  Minimum required grade in college is the junior level.

Arlington, with an estimated population of nearly 400,000, is the largest American city without any form of public transportation. Public support for measures to fund and implement bus services could be described as dismal, at best: Bond issues have been defeated and potential routes have been largely dismissed as not well thought out. Can a successful bus service for the citizens of Arlington ever be developed?

In this presentation, Dr. Satyamurti describes “Arlington City Transport” – his plan for a bus transit system for Arlington, including issues such as population forecasts, bus terminals, hubs, routes, fares, type of buses, bus stops, bus shelters, ticketing operations, safety and security.

Dr. Yuan Zhou is joining the IMSE team

IMSE has been very fortunate to attract another new faculty member to our team this fall. Dr. Zhou earned her doctorate degree and masters degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from The State University of New York in Buffalo, New York. She also earned a masters degree in Business Administration from La Sierra university in Riverside, California, and a bachelors in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering from the Beijing Institute of Technology in Beijing, China. Her research focus in in healthcare engineering where she looked at studying infectious disease transmission using a Agent-Based Simulation Modeling approach. Dr. Zhou has also worked in health data analytics with a focus on quality improvement and patient care.Yuan's Photo

Dr. Jaime Cantu is joining the IMSE team

We’re very excited to announce that Dr. Jaime Cantu will be joining us this fall semester. Dr. Cantu earned his doctorate and Master of Systems Engineering from Texas Tech University. His research focuses on comprehensive systems modeling which he applies to cotton futures, the cyclicality of cotton pricing, and most recently to healthcare organizations. He is completing a postdoctoral research project with B&W Pantex and Texas Tech University as a result of a Department of Energy grant.

Summer Quality Improvement and Patient Care Boot Camp

This summer the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) partnered with the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center to offer a summer Quality Improvement and Patient Care Boot Camp. In included 55 UTA engineering and nursing students along with UTSW medical students. The course was a 40-hour intensive training session on Quality Improvement tools followed by e-week live projects at UTSW Medical Center and Parkland Hospital. The projects were lead by the medical faculty and researchers from multiple departments and are part of a long term effort to improve the cost-effectiveness of medical services in the DFW area.

Title: Development and Application of Computer Modeling and Simulation in Healthcare Research

Abstract: Today’s healthcare is facing huge challenges in many aspects, including but not limited to, insufficient information for health policy development, barriers in meaningful use of Health Information Technology (HIT), fragmented care delivery processes, and undesirable resource allocations. To understand and solve those problems, computer modeling and simulation provides effective methods and powerful tools in design, creation, evaluation, and optimization of complex healthcare systems. Focusing on the development and application of computer simulation, this presentation will discuss two healthcare researches in public health and HIT domain.  The public health research aims to understand the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases in public indoor environment using Agent-Based Simulation (ABS) and facilitate health agencies to establish effective intervention strategies. An analytical framework based on agent-based modeling approach is developed by adequately considering the complexity of a high resolution contact network in shopping centers and uncertainties embedded in the disease transmission mechanism. An illustrative ABS model is constructed to demonstrate the Influenza transmission in a super-regional shopping center in Buffalo, New York. The research in HIT investigates the meaningful use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in ambulatory physician practices and quantifies the impact on practice operations using Discrete-Event Simulation (DES). The simulation model is developed based on a comprehensive workflow study that captures both clinical and nonclinical tasks with integration of a proposed EHR interoperability framework. The significant results include improved efficiency of interoperable tasks, reduced utilization of administrators, and increased utilization of physicians.Yuan's Photo

Biographical Sketch: Yuan Zhou is a PhD candidate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at University at Buffalo. Her research focuses on agent-based simulation, infectious disease modeling, process improvement, health information technology, and health data analytics. Yuan has received a Bachelor degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China and a Master degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering at University at Buffalo. She has been working closely with local healthcare organizations and manufacturing companies to improve their business operations from perspectives of processes, resource allocations, and facility layouts.
