Fall 2016 Honors College Research Symposium

Twelve Honors students will be present on topics ranging from parrots to comedy in politics and so much more for their end-of-semester senior presentation to be fulfill the oral presentation requirement for their Honors degree.

Native American Heritage Month: A Lecture By Dr. Brian Rice

The Honors College is collaborating with the Native American Student Association and The Department of History for a presentation by author and professor Dr. Brian Rice. His lecture, titled Journeys In The Land of The Peacemaker, is about bringing elders and members of the Iroquois community back to their homeland in Eastern Ontario and Central New York following the Great Law of Peace. The Law, also known as the Iroquois Constitution, is recognized for inspiring the union of the original 13 colonies during the creation of the United States.

Dr. Rice is a professor at The University of Winnipeg and enrolled member of the Mohawk Nation. He’s written several books including Encounters between Newcomers and Aboriginal Peoples in the East (2006) and Seeing the World with Aboriginal Eyes (2005). His dissertation, The Rotinonshonniis about his 700-mile walk through the Iroquois homeland which has inspired other tribal members to do the same. Rice graduated with a doctorate in Traditional Aboriginal Knowledge from the Division of Transformative Learning at the California Institute of Integral Studies, which is the only PhD program in the world focused on indigenous studies.

Honors Graduate Receives Double Awards

8ac350816b966ac74ca4735c_560x560Dr. Jocelyn Zee will be honored at UTA’s Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet November 10th as a distinguished recent graduate. She is the youngest recipient of this award. As an added honor, the Society of Hospital Medicine designated Dr. Zee as a Fellow in Hospital Medicine on October 28.

Currently, Dr. Zee is a hospitalist and critical care physician at JPS Health Network in Fort Worth. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in microbiology in 2004 and was one of the youngest students to graduate from UTA. She received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from UNT’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008.
