Bridge Fellow Investigates Microfossils

Foraminifera (or foram for short) means “hole bearers” in Latin. Foram are part of the ameboid protist class in the kingdom protista, meaning they’re single-celled organisms that are not plant, animal or fungi.  100 million years ago these tiny critters populated in the ancient oceans. Fifty thousand species scoured the sea floors and floated above the underwater plains.

Honors graduate and Torgeson Bridge fellow Laura Cruz-Gomez investigates foram fossils from the age of the dinosaurs. This was the Creteacous period — when parts of Texas were under a shallow sea. While one fifth of foram species still exist, there’s still more to learn about how the ancient foram lived. Continue reading

The Model Student: Adam Fogel’s Architecture

If you’ve seen the cardboard model of Italy’s Palazzo Vecchio sitting next to the couch in the Honors College office then you’ve noticed the work of architecture senior Adam Fogel.

Adam is the model architecture student. Last semester, he received a total of four accolades at the Honors Induction ceremony. He was awarded two scholarships, the Robert D. Riley Scholarship and the Nancy C. Sommerman Memorial scholarships. He also received the Alan and Bonnie Petsche Award for Honors Study Abroad. Plus, he encourages prospective UTA students to join the HC as an Honors College Advocate. Continue reading

Honors Graduate Receives Double Awards

8ac350816b966ac74ca4735c_560x560Dr. Jocelyn Zee will be honored at UTA’s Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet November 10th as a distinguished recent graduate. She is the youngest recipient of this award. As an added honor, the Society of Hospital Medicine designated Dr. Zee as a Fellow in Hospital Medicine on October 28.

Currently, Dr. Zee is a hospitalist and critical care physician at JPS Health Network in Fort Worth. She obtained her Bachelor of Science Honors Degree in microbiology in 2004 and was one of the youngest students to graduate from UTA. She received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from UNT’s Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2008.
