The 2017-2018 school year went off without a hitch with a big welcome and orientation for a record number of students. New and familiar faces came together to learn about what it takes to be an excellent Honors student.
Interim Dean Dr. Gustafson spoke about the importance of being a courtier – serving one’s audience above all else. He referenced renaissance author Baldassare Castiglione’s The Book of the Courtier. To be successful, he said, one must have “sprezzatura” which means “a certain nonchalance” or an attitude of making whatever one does simple and punctual.
Assistant Dean Dr. Henry also shared a few pearls of wisdom: Be respectful, share your knowledge and always get enough sleep!
Other speakers from the Honors community gave advice and invited students to participate a variety of activities. These speakers included UTA Provost Dr. Teik Lim, Undergraduate Research Advocate Josimar Hernandez, Scholarship/Fellowship Advocate Maranda Spencer, Honors College Councilmember Kirsten Orobitg and Susan Dequeant from the Center for Service Learning.
From the getting involved with the Honors College Council to volunteering with The Center for Service Learning, obtaining scholarships, fellowships and participating in undergraduate research — there’s something for everyone at the Honors College.
So, to all the new Honors students out there, have a fantastic year!
