UTA Speech Sounds Lab

About the lab

The UTA Speech Sounds Lab is directed by Dr. Ivy Hauser. The lab houses equipment for perception and production studies, including a sound-attenuated booth. We have regular lab meetings which are open to all members of the Department of Linguistics & TESOL.

We are happy to provide undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to work in the lab. Students should contact Dr. Hauser if they are interested in conducting independent research,  working as a research assistant, or attending research group meetings.

• Imitation of phonetic variability in L1 and L2 speech (PI: Dr. Ivy Hauser)
  • Will resume participant recruitment in November 2024
• Acoustic realization of clearly spoken Mandarin fricatives (PI: Dr. Ivy Hauser)
  • Currently recruiting native Mandarin speakers
• Phonetic drift of emphatic stops in L1 Arabic L2 English speakers (PI: Dema Smadi, Advisor: Dr. Ivy Hauser)
  • Currently recruiting Arabic speakers
• Imitation L1 sounds in an L2 environment (PI: Erica Dagar, Advisor: Dr. Ivy Hauser)
  • Currently recruiting participants with any language backgrounds
