Library Research Tips

  • Do an electronic search of many databases.  In addition to Business Source Premier try EconLit, Academic Search Premier, JSTOR, Kluwer Online, and Ingenta (although downloads are not always free on this one).
  • Choose your Key Search Words carefully.  Start broad and then try to narrow into your topic.  For example, start with Real Estate and then try Hedonic and so on.Also, use the term Property in place of Real Estate.  (Real Estate is called Property almost everywhere else in the world.  You might find some useful British or New Zealand references.)
  • If you are having trouble thinking of a topic it might be helpful to flip through journals.  Check out the following journals: Appraisal Journal, Journal of Real Estate Research, Real Estate Economics, Land Economics, Urban Studies, and Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics (and others).
  • Once you find one good citation, check out that citation’s citations.  Bet you find several other good ones (although they might be older so make sure you check for any recent ones).

Using Regression in Excel

Step 1: Load the Data Analysis Tool.  Go to Tools then Add In and check the Analysis TookPak box.  Click OK.

Step 2: Go back to Tools and at the bottom of the menu should be Data Analysis….  Click Data Analysis and scroll down to Regression.  Also, note there are several other useful functions such as frequencies, descriptive statistics, and ANOVA.

Step 3: Once in the regression menu it is pretty self explanatory (if not, don’t forget the Excel help functions).  Basically, you just paint in the Y and X variables and indicated where and what you want your output to contain.
