Abstract

Music has been known to have several therapeutic qualities. It has been used as a means to reduce stress, improve memory, and much more, but what about those individuals unable to experience the benefits of music due to hearing impairments. SoundSquad seeks to bring the joy of music to all individuals with our SoundSquad vest. The SounSquad vest is a vest that outputs the vibration of music. Shakers are used to produce the vibration of low, mid, and high pass frequencies in music. The vest is focused for the hearing impaired but can be purchased by anyone.

Background

In this project, our team will design, and implement a sound vibration vest that provides the hearing impaired a way to feel the different frequencies in music. The individuals should be able to feel the low, high, and mid-range frequency sounds. The vest should be portable and not bulky. Audio signals are being sent to a series of filters that will split the frequencies into low, mid and high vibrations. This project topic was chosen from a list of topics provided by our UTA Senior Design professor.

Project Requirements

  • A vest that produces vibrations of the low frequencies in a song
  • A vest that produces vibrations of the mid frequencies in a song
  • A vest that produces vibrations of the high frequencies in a song
  • Ability to mobility power the vest so it can be used anywhere
  • A website that displays vest details and allows users to purchase the vest

System Overview

A circuit was built to take in music signals from an aux input that will be connected directly to the user’s phone. The sound waves are filtered into lows, mids, and highs. These sound waves are converted to frequencies and passed to shakers (speakers), that release the vibrations of that frequency.

Future Work

  • Adding the ability to play music via Bluetooth, rather than linking a phone through aux
  • Adding the ability to create playlists on the website
  • Allowing the user to have some limited control over the settings of the vibrations
