Abstract
Drag Reduction Systems (more commonly just called DRS) have been up and coming for the past 10 years in the formula racing segment, with Formula One beginning to implement DRS rules and regulations in 2011. In F1, DRS is only used by vehicles to overtake a car in front of them, and can only be used in designated sections of the track \cite{F1web}. This solution is driver activated, but we are looking for a solution that is automated and would require no driver input, and would be purely controlled from a central computer, but the implementation is very similar overall. In Formula SAE, there are no restrictions on using a DRS system as of 2018 besides general aerodynamic system limitations regarding wing placement and size, so UTA’s team wants to create and exploit the use of a DRS system to not only speed up the car’s lap times, but in general judging and aero scoring as well.
Background
The UTA Formula SAE Team has been using a manual DRS that requires the driver to flip a switch when changing the state of the wing.
The goal of our project is to automate that system so that the driver can focus on other tasks.
Our primary requirements are to build a system that will use a gyroscope and accelerometer to determine when the car is taking a turn or on a straightaway and open and close the wing accordingly.
